The Children's Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools program is a six-week summer literacy and cultural enrichment program.The mission of the CDF Freedom Schools programs is to boost student motivations to read, generate more positive attitudes toward learning, increase self-esteem and connect the needs of children and families to the resources of their communities.

Bloomfield New Light CDC Freedom School is excited to offer this program to children with the

completion of 3rd to 8th grades.

​​

 

Location: New Light Baptist Church

               89-91 Dewey Street

               Bloomfield, NJ 07003

​

Time: 8:00am to 3:30pm

​

Cost: Free- includes breakfast, lunch and snack.

Servant Leader Interns

Job Description

 

College students and recent college graduates play a key role in the CDF Freedom School program in the position of servant Leader Interns. Each CDF freedom Schools Servant Leader Interns serves as the teacher for a maximum of 10 scholars. Servant Leader Interns have access to further leadership development and networking opportunities geared toward continued direct service and advocacy on behalf of the children and families.

Responsibilities

​

  • Bring energy, enthusiasm, and a positive attitudes to create an engaging and supportive learning environment for scholars

  • Foster excitement for learning and encourage scholars to actively participate in all activities,

  • Serve as a positive role model for all scholars.

  • Supervise and maintain safety of scholars.

  • Maintain a professional decorum.

  • Set up, manage and break down classroom space according to standards outlined by CDF and the sponsor organization.

  • Engage a maximum of 10 scholars per class in the Intergrated Reading Curriculum.

  • Attend all required Ella Baker Child Policy Training Institute training sessions.

    • May Orientation (date TBD)

    • June 3-8, 2025, Mandatory In-Person Training in Tennessee. Cost of all travel, lodging and all meals will be covered.

  • Commit to the entire 7-week duration of the program - (40 hours/week)

    • Site: 89-91 Dewey Street, Bloomfield, NJ 07003

    • June 30-July3, 2025: Staff Planning and Prep Week

    • July 7-August 15, 2025: 6 week Summer Program

  • Work with site staff to ensure that all program components are implemented with fidelity.

  • Report any issues or concerns regarding operation to the Site Coordinator

Qualifications

​​

  • Must have completed at least one year of college in good standing.

  • Ability to motivate others and work as part of an intergenerational team. 

  • Solid commitment to the success and well-being of children.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Exhibit positive behavior and attitude, modeling a mature and professional demeanor.
